How to Block Or Uninstall Windows 7 Activation Update KB971033

by usman on July 17, 2010

in Troubleshooting and Fixes

Microsoft has pushed their latest Windows 7 Activation Update checker which checks whether Windows 7 is activated legally through Microsoft or it has been cracked using several activation methods. Installing this update creates a process that checks for activation method of the Windows every now and then to see if the Windows is legal.

Fortunately Microsoft has made it easy for the people who don’t want this update to uninstall it. If you haven’t downloaded and installed this update then you can disable it using the following method:

Block Windows 7 Activation Update KB971033

  1. Go to Start Menu and write Windows Update in the Start Menu Search
  2. Select Windows Update to go to Windows Update program
  3. Select Optional Updates
  4. Search for the update labeled “Update for Windows 7 (KB971033)”
  5. Right click it and select Hide Update

This will disable this update from automatically installing into your system.

Uninstall Windows 7 Activation Update KB971033

If you have already installed this update. Don’t worry! Let me tell you how to uninstall this update the safer way.

  1. Go to Control Panel –> Programs –> View installed Updates
  2. Search for “Update for Windows 7 (KB971033)”
  3. Right click it and select Uninstall.
  4. This will uninstall this activation update and you’ll be able to use your Windows 7 without any overloads from Microsoft :-)

If there is any problem in this method, kindly let me know through comments.

I can get to the “View Update History” and can see Update for Windows (KB971033) AND Updated for Windows 7 (KB970133) – However Right Clicking does nothing to help – just “View Details”

If I search in any other way for Updates I do not see these updates and so cannot make any changes

Any suggestions ????

I’ve tried that but I think that if someone were to create a blacklist file for the C:\Windows\System32\Driver(s)\etc in the hosts file to block if some one could find out how the activation tool work then it would be great to know!!!

For those of you who right click and it just says “View Details”, re-read the instructions posted here. DO NOT go through windows update, go to control panel -> view installed updates, etc. to remove. THEN go to windows update to disable this update from reinstalling in the future

@Mike
Thanks a lot for clarifying Mike.

To block the update I can get to the Windows Update program, but I cannot find an “Optional Updates” selection. Any thoughts?

Avirhel September 19, 2010 at 4:47 PM

I can´t uninstall it. appears an error and don´t uninstall.

using this:
“dism /online /remove-package /PackageName:Microsoft-Windows-Security-WindowsActivationTechnologies-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~7.1.7600.16395″

gives the erros access denied :-|

Problem with this approach. I got stuck with 971033 a couple months ago (its reported install date was 1/1/2011 despite my time being correct). I was able to remove it back then, but I guess they revamped it and re-released it. I have my OS set to notify when updates are available, but never download or install. However, it was downloaded and installed without so much as a message telling me so. I can uninstall it and it needs to reboot to take effect. When it starts up again, the update is installed again. I am running Windows 7 Pro x64 (and yes, a completely free and clear legal copy) Any ideas?

To uninstall updates on Windows 7. Control Panel >> Windows Update >> View update history >> on top before listing of all updates, To remove an update, see…click where it says Installed Updates >> Select your poison and remove it

I recently upgraded microsoft security essentials and started getting (this copy of windows is not genuine) I restored my computer but it had no effect still getting the message at boot and constantly appearing in the taskbar about every 15 minutes. I have hidden KB971033 and have shut down auto updates (did that along time ago) KB971033 does not appear in installed updates, something installed with the new version of MSE and is very annoying. Microsoft Security Essentials Client update package – KB2267610 I am running Windows 7 Ultimate

Drew February 23, 2011 at 8:06 PM

I got this update not knowing what it was , and once it figured out i was using a non genuine copy of win 7 it was impossible to bypass , long story short i had to reinstall windows .

Drew February 23, 2011 at 8:08 PM

At the bottom of the System page, it still say’s there are so many days left before I have to activate it, even after deleting that update…

Help? Thanks

bartman May 15, 2011 at 1:20 PM

The uninstall option seems to have disappeared from add/remove programs but Niks script worked perfectly. Thanks all.

I uninstalled the KB971033 update by following the 2nd procedure, and hid it from the available updates just like Mike instructed – but it seems the countdown is still counting down, yesterday it was 4 days and now it’s 3. Help, anyone? ;)

Daryl Girdharie June 24, 2011 at 7:57 PM

i did what u said about hiding the update and 4 a few days it worked…everything was fine but then today i put on my pc and i got WGA notifications…..when i checked…the KB971033 update had been installed again.

Ai June 28, 2011 at 7:27 AM

Wow thanks that was very helpful ^^_

jon w July 21, 2011 at 7:09 PM

i’ve uninstalled and hidden the abovementioned, but I haven’t yet rebooted to see if it’ll work.
What I wanted to add was I took it a step further to prevent windows updating itself by goiing into command prompt and running services.msc.
I then Disabled Windows Update.
I shall reboot now. Hope that works.

ed July 24, 2011 at 3:38 PM

After uninstalling KB971033 everything was fine…until a recent update, when it was re-installed. I uninstalled it again, but this time it did not work. It does not show as installed, but I no longer have Windows; I have a blank screen show Windows not genuine! Am I going to lose everything and have to do a new install? HELP!
Thanks,
Ed

Hi, I’ve followed the directions up to searching for the security update for Windows 7 point in uninstalling it, but I can’t find the update. All my updates seem to be of a higher number than (KB971033), have I waited too long to fix the problem then does that mean? This problem with getting genuine windows is really annoying and I can’t seem to find a way to fix it. Can anyone help?

JB August 4, 2011 at 11:44 AM

Hi

For those who can´t uninstal KB971033:

- Command prompt: msconfig (run as Administrator – right click mouse)
- Tools
- Programs
- Start
- Installed updates (left upper screen)
- Just select KB971033, and uninstall

Regarding KB949810, I didn´t find it.

Well, to be quite honest, I STILL CAN´T DO UPDATES to Windows ; if I can´t solve it I´ll format and reinstall Windows taking the due precautions not to let Windows to install KB971033.

I do hope it works

Any feed-backs are welcome:)

Andy August 7, 2011 at 10:55 PM

I’ve uninstalled – now it doesn’t appear in the list of optional updates for me to press “hide”. Has this happened to anyone else?

Charlene August 19, 2011 at 10:43 AM

My windows 7 is still saying not genuine , KB971033 is in update history, but is not there when you look in installed updates, so I know it is here, it just will not let me get rid of it. Everything above does not work, it never appears in any form for you to uninstall. Can you help?

Deoclid August 28, 2011 at 8:13 PM

My W7Ultimate says it´s genuine but the security essentials mxxxxr fxxxxr goes on telling it will shutdown in 29 days from now and it sucks with 15min popup message. I think the solution is to uninstall this MS shit anda choose another antivirus …
Any other opionion? Tks ;)

Shianne August 29, 2011 at 1:26 AM

an error has occured.NOT ALL OF THE UPDATES WERE SUCCESSFULLY UNINSTALLED

Matty Jenkins February 10, 2012 at 6:18 PM

Hi, for those that still have the ‘Not Genuine Windows’ problem, try using removewat (Windows Activation Technologies). This removes the WAT from Windows and should solve your problem. Hope this helps.
